How to Participate

Committee Workscope and Goals One of our tasks is to look across the current 508 structure, the 6 product categories, to find common elements that could be brought together, or at least thought about consistently. One reason is that there is some duplication within the current structure. For example, the provisions about "mechanically operated controls and keys" appear in Telecom, Desktop Computers, and Closed Products. Another reason is that the product category structure itself is under continual assault by the shifting, morphing, converging ICT product ecosystem. It could be argued that all 6 categories are less clear and useful than they were a few years ago.

In fact, the initial Access Board NPRM included provisions stated this way, under several functional categories in addition to the product categories.

This subcommittee will explore the general interface accessibility guidelines. This includes:

  1. Looking at issues that occur across multiple product categories in 255 and 508
  2. Reviewing the functional performance criteria (1194.31)
  3. Other cross cutting issues not covered by other subcommittees
  4. Considering the Themes throughout

The group is not charged with deciding anything. Just identifying, highlighting, exploring options to issues identified, and then providing information on all of these to the TEITAC to inform the TEITAC – who will then decide what to do.

Topics

This list contains the general topics that have been raised by members of the group. Each is a link to an additional page where additional information on the topic is available. Participants should feel free to add to this list and to the content on any of our pages.

  1. Issues That Cut Across the Product Categories
  2. Combine 508 255
  3. Does your product comply with 508?
    • That is the question asked. But compliance may be in the final configuration and use. The configuration and use may be under the control of the manufacturer. But many times it is a function of the System Integrator or the people who purchase and apply the product.
  4. Functional Performance Criteria (1194.31)
  5. What type of research exists for any of the general topics {Future Link}
  6. Consideration of the Themes
  7. Review of other standards to determine provisions that need to be added
    • to make up for gaps in this standard
    • to cover new aspects not there or clear last time around
    • to increase quality of the standard
  8. Cooperation between AT. (Should we even be talking about what AT should do? It is an adaptation to E&IT not an E&IT)
  9. Other Topics
    • how to deal with provisions where there is a general overall one but some specific sub items
    • how to incorporate 'sufficient techniques' idea

Issues this subcommittee is NOT addressing, but which should be addressed by another.

  • issues for cognitive language and learning
  • whether there is something to be done in allergy area
  • A method shall be provided to stop any blinking or movement that lasts more than 3 seconds. This is a first pass and needs work. Also check to be sure it isnt too broad. 1194.21(h) covers this for animation in software. Is this the only technology (thus should this go to software/web??)
  • Short Names
  • Other organizational Changes?
